A difficult energy market at the end of 2021

Because of the high volatility of gas prices and the unexpected, prolonged increase during 2021, a number of growers realised too late that they should fix their prices for the longer term. There are also growers who want to take advantage of the high electricity price by selling the electricity they will generate in the future in advance. The idea is to buy that electricity back later at a lower price for their own use. It is also possible to speculate on a fall in the gas price.

Risks in energy trading

This kind of energy speculation sometimes works out well, but with today's price volatility and uncertainties it unfortunately also often goes wrong.

There are currently many factors supporting all energy prices, which means there have been few downward corrections. Where they did occur, as in October, December and March, they followed a parabolic upward movement and were usually short-lived. The increase is now also more structural in nature.

Liquidity and trading conditions are also currently not suited to being very active in the market.
